Welcome to our Sumi-E One Brush Ink Painting Course
Sumi-E is a traditional Japanese art form painting motifs from nature and the natural world, using just one brush and black ink on white paper. In this workshop we will use some of these ideas, the painting style is using simple fluid lines in one movement where possible. With no underdrawing, it’s a great exercise in committing to line, practising mark making and brush control to create some wonderful images in monochrome.

Sumi-E One Brush Ink Painting
Sumi-E is a traditional Japanese art form painting motifs from nature and the natural world, using just one brush and black ink on white paper. In this class we will use some of these ideas, bringing some freedom and movement into our painting in a very fluid, simplified style.
MATERIALS
- Paper – Cartridge paper/ smooth watercolour paper/ even newspaper will do to practise!
- Sumi – E paper for Japanese ink painting sometimes called rice paper
- Black ink ( I use black drawing ink)
- Brush – Round brush size 10/ 12, or a traditional Chinese painting brush.
- palette (with separate wells)
- Board
- Masking tape
The book I have is called ‘Sumi-E Just for You’ by Hakuho Hirayama.
